No funds, no practice: CR, Kandy slam door on rugby Sevens

26 September, 2021

Two leading rugby playing clubs in Sri Lanka CR and FC and Kandy SC will not be in action at the Invitation Rugby Sevens tournament that will be worked off on October 30 and 31 at the Police Park in Colombo.

This tournament is organized by the tri forces, Army, Air Force and Navy in conjunction with the Police SC with the hope of bringing back the game after such a long lapse due to unavoidable circumstances.

Two clubs that have confirmed their participation are CH and FC and Havelock SC.

CR president Hiran Muttiah said that the players have not been practicing so far and a tournament like the Sevens demands peak fitness.

“We have explained our reasons for not fielding a team and hope they (organisers) will take it in good spirits,” said Muttiah.

Kandy Sports Club, the defending League and Sevens champions had written to the organisers stating their inability to participate in this event.

“We have been out of rugby for the past 18 months and it’s impossible for the players to train and regain their fitness to the peak within a short period like one month. Our sponsors have also withheld funding” said Mahesh Weerasinghe, the president of Kandy SC.

Each club has been requested to field two teams and the four forces have confirmed to field two teams each and the matches will be worked off without spectators.

A golden opportunity to conduct the annual inter club Sevens in March this year was squandered after the sponsor played spoil sport and withdrew following differences between Sri Lanka Rugby and Air Force which was to host the matches.
