International Day of the Girl Child

Girls grow into womanhood and it is their hands that rock the cradles. Thus, it is very important that girls are taken care of every step of the way.

Each year the Girl Child is celebrated on October 11.which is the International Day of the Girl Child. It focuses on adolescent girls and their wellbeing. This day also give an opportunity for the voices of girls to be heard. It also highlights their talents and focuses on creating opportunities for girls to make use of their talents. The day also focuses on doing away with problems girls face around the world such as child marriages, lack of educational opportunities and violence.

It was at the ‘World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, in 1995, that focus on the Rights of the Girl Child was first mooted.The Beijing Delaration included the Rights of the Girl Child in it.

On December 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognise girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
