Sri Lanka to form rugby pool after Warrior Sevens

17 October, 2021

A rugby pool of 20 players will be selected after the Warriors Rugby Sevens tournament that will be worked off on October 30 and 31 at Police Park.

Chairman of selectors Asoka Jayasena said that this pool will consist of players who participate in the Warrior Sevens. Kandy SC and CR and FC are not fielding teams but Jayasena said their players will also stand a chance for selection fulfilling the required criteria.

“We have decided to include players from Kandy SC and CR in the pool. They will have to undergo training together with the rest the players and undergo a fitness test before the final squad of 12 players and three standby players are picked,” said Jayasena.

“If players from Kandy and CR are to be included then the pool will be increased to about 30 players.

“In previous years the captain and the best players in the Sri Lanka team were from Kandy SC, but if they fail the fitness test then they cannot be included,” said Jayasena.

The Warrior Sevens will have 10 teams participating with Army, Navy, Air Force and Police fielding two teams each while Havelocks and CH will field one team each.

“The first round will be played on a league basis and the knock-out stage will be worked off on the second day,” said Nizam Jamaldeen the tournament director.

There will be the Cup, Plate and Bowl segments up for grabs.

The Groups:

Group A: CH & FC, Army A, Air Force B, Navy B

Group B: Police A, Havelock SC, Army Colts

Group C: Air Force A, Navy A, Police Griffins
