17 girls to vie for honours in Asian Youth Online chess

A 17-member Sri Lanka squad is set to compete in the Asian Youth Online Girls Chess Championships 2021 this weekend.

Three players each in the under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 age group were selected from their performances at the Sri Lanka Youth Age Group Chess Championships 2021.

The top three players and two of the fourth-players were included due to the absence of G.H.S. Sanulya in the under 12 and Sandeepani M. Tharushi in the under 16 event.

The Asian Youth Chess Championship is the most prestigious chess tournament in Asia for youth chess players. The Indian Chess Federation is organising the event on behalf of the Asian Chess Federation this year.

More than 1,000 players have registered in this event which is held according to the Swiss system at Tornelo Platform.

The Sri Lanka squad comprises Under 10 girls online world chess champion Oshini Gunawardena, West Asian gold medallist Harshana Tillekaratne, and Sri Lanka national chess champion Ranindu Liyanage.

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka hopes West Asian Under 18 silver medallist Susal de Silva and Esandi Newansa will also participate for more exposure.

Under 10: A.W.M. Arundi Beminiwatte (Defence Service College), Oshini Gunawardene (Ferguson High School, Ratnapura), H.G. Sasmi Sithumsa (Lyceum International, Ratnapura)

Under 12: Anujana Sendanayake (Ananda Sastralaya, Matugama), Esandi Newansa (Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda), Chenaya Ekaratne (Musaeus College)

Under 14: Hansi Kodikara (Musaeus), Chanindi Attanayake (Devi Balika, Colombo), Dahamdi Sanudula (Musaeus)

Under 16: Piyumi Uthpala Amaratunga (JMC International, Kalutara), Desandhi Gamage (Sirimavo BMV), Tenuli Dahamna Ratnayake (Ananda Balika)

Under 18: Oneli Vithanawasam (Lyceum International), Nemindi Linaya Ramanayake (Bandaranayake Central, Veyangoda)
