Eighty Covid-19 patients in ICU - Dr. Hemantha Herath

24 October, 2021

Eighty ICU beds were still being occupied by Covid-19 patients in a critical condition on Friday and people will witness the negative impact of breaking travel restrictions in another two or three weeks, Health Services Deputy Director General Dr. Hemantha Herath said. He told a press briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau in Colombo on Friday that Sri Lanka has only around 2,000 Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) and only the PHIs and MOH have legal power when controlling Covid-19. Therefore, all the other authorities with legal power should be actively involved in controlling people’s travelling.

Dr. Herath said that people should follow health guidelines, all the time, otherwise Sri Lanka will need to be locked down again in the future due to Covid-19 waves.

Every day, the media highlights how people ignore basic health guidelines and, moreover, the health authorities stress the importance of following basic health guidelines, all the time, but it seems there is no significant change in the people’s irresponsible behaviour, he said.
