Swimming trials in January as SLASU wants them back in the water

28 November, 2021

The Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) intends to conduct selection trials in the Open and Youth Age Groups on January 21 and 22 at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Complex and have the selected groups under training in preparation for all major international swimming competitions in 2022.

As directed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the National Selection Committee and the National Olympic Committee, SLASU reserves the right to amend the selection criteria due to circumstances beyond its control or hold further selection trials afresh if the need arises. “SLASU proposes to hold further trials or declare any of its national meets as trial events and revise its selections,” a swimming official said.

This selection trials will be for awarding High Performance Training Scholarships and funding for athletes targeting major events from 2022-2026, short listing of national training pools for Commonwealth Games 2022, Asian Games 2022 and Asian Youth Games 2022, and awarding of travel funding when participating at regional international competitions.

Closing date for entries is January 7 at 4 pm with the SLASU office at the Department of Sports Development, No. 33, Torrington Place, Colombo 7.

Entries will not be accepted until a proof of full payment of fee is tendered and a receipt is issued.

Selection and participation at the Asian Games 2022 and Commonwealth Games 2022 will be subject to the discretion and conditions of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka as the affiliate of the convenor, the Olympic Council of Asia.

Swimmers who wish to participate in the third Asian Youth Games must be born between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2007. Meanwhile SLASU) is now endeavouring to motivate swimmers back into action after a long break from the pool during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This break has been as long as nearly two years and the frustrated swimmers are eagerly waiting to get the feel of the water as soon as possible.

They have arranged a back-to-the-pool motivation program on December 10, 11 and 12 at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool complex to get the swimmers out of their shells. This will include diving events also.

Entries are called from swimmers to reach the SLASU office on or before December 6 by 3 p.m.
