The Decision Review System (DRS) may have been implemented to ensure justice and fair-play in cricket, but it is not without its share of controversy as Indian skipper Virat Kohli was ruled out leg-before on the first day of the second Test against New Zealand on Friday.
Kohli faced just four balls and was ruled out leg-before to spinner Ajaz Patel after the third umpire upheld the call of on-field official Anil Chaudhary.
Kohli asked for a review of the ruling and television umpire Virender Sharma upheld the decision with replays showing the ball appearing to edge the bat that should have been overturned.
"Ball and bat and pad appears to be together. I don't have any conclusive evidence to overturn that," Sharma was heard saying.
Kohli returned to the pavilion after talking to the on-field umpire Nitin Menon and in apparent frustration hit the boundary rope with his bat.
Former India opener Wasim Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo: “Just to say it was 'inconclusive evidence', I think it wasn't the right call. Disappointing decision".
Former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori was quoted as saying: "For me it seemed obvious there was an inside edge. For one man to sit there and try and make such a crucial decision, maybe the match referee can step in".
Simon Doull, the former New Zealand fast bowler who is now a commentator said: "There was no conclusive evidence that the ball hit the pad first. So, I think the process was followed. The process was right.”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan wrote "NOT OUT" on Twitter.
