Gampaha athletes outsmart the rest

Athletes from the Gampaha District dominated at the 33rd National Youth Sports Festival that enabled them to emerge overall champions for the seventh consecutive year at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Wednesday.

This championship was conducted by the Ministry of Sports, National Youth Services Council and the Sri Lanka Federation of Youth Clubs.

Gampaha amassed 170 points where a total of 3000 under-20 and over-20 athletes participated.

Colombo District finished second with 102 points while Kandy District was third with 93 points.

Sayuri Mendis of Gampaha who clocked 56.00 seconds in the 400m event which was a new meet record while SK Dias of Kurunegala District who clocked 14.27 seconds in the 110m hurdles which was also a new meet record, were adjudged best female and male athletes in the under-20 category.

PB Herath from the Kandy District who leapt 7.52m in the men’s long jump and Kaushalya Madushani who clocked 60.44 seconds in the 400m hurdles won the best male and female awards in the over-20 category.

They were awarded Rs 250,000 each as prize money unlike last year when they received a motor bike.

A total of twelve new meet records were established in the four day event. Shanika Lakshani of Gampaha established two meet records in the 800m and the 1500m events in the girls’ under-20 category.

In all there were ten new records in the under-20 category while only two were set in the over-20 category.

Gampaha were rewarded with Rs. 150,000 in prize money while Colombo received Rs. 100,000 and Kandy Rs. 75,000 for finishing first, second and third respectively.
