Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma called upon journalists to base their reporting only on facts and figures rather than on sentiment.
Alahapperuma was the Chief Guest at a ceremony Mathota Madya Abhiman organised by “Journalists in Matara” to confer the once-in-a-life-time award on five most senior journalists in the district.
The Minister, complimenting the unity among journalists in Matara, said that “Journalists in Matara” were a model that all other journalists associations, politicians and the community on the whole should follow.
He said the only time politicians worked for a common cause was for a few days after the 2004 tsunami.
Alahapperuma said that information has become the most valuable commodity in the 21st century. The richest people and companies were the providers of information, he said.
The Minister asked journalists to be updated on new media.
