Sri Lanka not out of Omicron danger - DDGHS

9 January, 2022

Sri Lanka cannot say, “We are out of danger” when it comes to the Omicron variant of Covid-19. Although Sri Lanka and other South East Asian countries, apart from India, do not show an increase in the number of Omicron cases, it has increased drastically in other countries, Deputy Director General Health Services (DDGHS), Dr. Hemantha Herath said.

He told a press briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau in Colombo on Friday that it seems that the Omicron wave went up speedily in other countries, especially in Europe and it dropped at the same speed. But, it is too early to say anything.

“What we, Sri Lankans should do is to try to prevent the Omicron wave or delay it by strictly following all health guidelines, all the time, and obtaining the booster dose as soon as possible,” he said.

Dr. Herath said, “We should not wait until it arrives. We have to prevent it or delay it. It is the best way of facing it. The set of health guidelines issued until the end of this month should be strictly implemented, he added.
