New T20 rule comes into effect

9 January, 2022

A fielding team that fails to start the first ball of the last over in a T20 International on the scheduled or rescheduled time, will be penalised during play under the new rules governing the format.

The new rule is among the changes made by the International Cricket Council for T20 matches.

According to the new rule, a team that fails to start the first ball of the last over by the scheduled or rescheduled time will be penalised by the prevention of one fielder outside the 30-yard circle.

Another rule change makes it optional for teams to have an optional drinks break midway in the innings.

The new rule comes into place for the first time when the West Indies take on Ireland in a T20 International on January 18.
