Covid-19: Next two weeks crucial

16 January, 2022

The next two weeks are crucial for Sri Lanka when it comes to the spread of Covid-19. There is a rapid increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in some countries such as India and European countries, Consultant Epidemiologist of the Epidemiology Unit, Dr. Deepa Gamage said.

She told a press briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau in Colombo on Friday that there is no rapid increase in the number of Omicron cases in Sri Lanka as yet, but the country is in a decisive juncture now and the next two weeks are crucial.

Dr. Gamage said that it is important for people over the age of 20 who have obtained the second dose of the vaccine three months ago to obtain the booster dose to avoid any possible outbreak.

All vaccination centres in the country function during holidays and, therefore, they can get their booster dose from any vaccination centre.

At present, 600 to 700 daily Covid-19 cases and 10 to 20 Covid-19 deaths are reported in Sri Lanka and most of those deaths are of people over the age of 60 and those who suffer from chronic diseases.

During the past two months, the country continued this control with the support of all, she said.
