Downing Street party during lockdown

16 January, 2022

A Downing Street garden party held during the first Covid lockdown in 2020 has sparked a national outrage in the UK. As a result, Boris Johnson has issued an apology in the House of Commons, where he took responsibility and admitted to attending the party.

However, the Prime Minister’s apology was not well received as he stated that he believed the party was a work event, although over 100 people were invited and encouraged to bring their own alcohol by the Prime Minister’s private secretary.

At the time of the party, the Covid rules in England stated that all social gatherings of more than two people were strictly prohibited. An official investigation has been launched over the alleged breaches of the rules which will be led by senior civil servant Sue Gray.

Whilst 20 Cabinet ministers have backed Boris Johnson, senior members of Parliament have urged him to stand down as Prime Minister.

Jim Shannon, MP for Strangford, cried as he explained his mother-in-law had died alone with Covid during the pandemic. This story resonated heavily with the public as many faced a similar ordeal.

Other members of the public who were fined up to £10,000 for breaking lockdown rules are demanding refunds after learning about the garden party.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak was notably missing during the PM’s apology as he visited Devon to meet with Pall Corporation, a company that protects and purifies pharmaceutical drugs including UK Covid vaccines. Sunak’s absence has fuelled speculation of a future Conservative leadership bid.

The Prime Minister’s fate may depend on the outcome of the investigation. In the event that Boris Johnson resigns as PM, it is believed that Rishi Sunak will be tipped as one of the favourites to take over. If appointed, Rishi Sunak would become the first ever coloured British Prime Minister.
