The Army team emerged champions of the inter-club women’s six-a-side cricket tournament conducted by the Colombo District Women’s Cricket Association (CDWCA) at Ace Capital Cricket Club ground in Narahenpita last weekend.
Held as part of the CDWCA’s silver jubilee, the tournament was sponsored by Bio Extract, manufacturers of Baraka products, with the participation of Army, Navy, Ace Capital CC, Badureliya, Colombo Colts, Sky Cricket Club, Malabe DR Cricket Club Wadduwa, Chilaw Marians and HR Ladies Cricket Club, Moratuwa.
Army ‘A’ beat Ace Capital CC by eight runs in the final after making 35 for no loss. Imalka Mendis was adjudged Player of the Final. Ace Capital CC in reply made 27 for one.
In the semi-finals, Army A beat Badureliya CC by one run while Ace Capital CC outplayed Navy A by 15 runs.
Army A made 27 for 3 with contributions from Sakunthala de Silva and Sdharshika Bandara. Badureliya fell agonisingly short making 26 for 2 with Sansala Wanigasekera being unbeaten on 10.
Ace Capital CC scored 35 for 2 with Shikari Nuwantha making 12 against Navy A who made 20 for 1.
Manuri Dulansa, the youngest player in the tournament of HR Ladies Cricket Club, Moratuwa, a student of Prince of Wales, and Sikari Dulansa of Ace Capital CC were the only two players to hit a six each.
The chief guest was Mohan de Silva, Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket while representatives of the sponsors Bio Extract’s Chief Financial Officer Mohomed Fahim, Marketing Manager Gayan Jayasinghe and Field Sales Manager Irshan Itfan were the guests of honour. Olympic referee Chief Inspector Nelka Shiromala was present as a special guest.
Pure Beverages, Diamond Best Food Company, Hemas, Hayleys and Sri Arogya Food also supported the tournament.
