Sri Lankan girl goes places in track and field in Darwin

A Sri Lankan girl studying in Darwin, Australia, Senethma Edirisooriya, has gone places down under while representing her school Essington International School in track and field sports.

Senethma now age 15, had her early education at Musaeus College in Colombo and has shown her potential in the 200 and 100 metres events. She clocked 25.8 seconds in the 200 metres and 12.65 in the 100 metres and was initially coached by Harjana Ratnayake, Roshini Bowatta, Elvin Fernando, Sisira Mahesh and Nayanthi Kumari in Sri Lanka.

Senethma showed promise as an athlete from the age of nine and was placed first in the Western Province meet in the long jump and 100 metres in 2015.

In Australia she won the gold medal in the 200 metres, 4X100 relay and long jump at the Northern Territory track and field championships in 2020 in the Under-16 category while also winning a silver medal in the 100 metres.

Senethma established a record in the long jump and 400 metres that overshadowed past feats by the Darwin Athletics Club in the same Northern Territory championship in the following year 2021 that also brought her gold medals in the 100 metres, 200 metres, long jump and 4X100.

In the same year 2021 Senethma taking part in the Darwin Regional Athletic Championships broke records in the 200 metres and long jump events and won a further five gold medals in the 100, 200, long jump, triple jump and 4X100 performing in the Under-18 age group to receive Colours as the schools top performer.
