Navy win lop-sided contest 12-0 over lacklustre Police

30 January, 2022

Navy SC was made to fight hard for their slender 12 points (2 tries, a conversion) to nil win over Police SC in their Dialog League rugby encounter played at Police Park yesterday.

Both teams indulged in close tackling that did not allow any side to dominate or do any scoring as easily as ever. They also made very little handling errors but the close tackling saw the game stay in midfield most of the duration.

Police had a chance to take the lead in the first half when they were offered a penalty for an infringement on a kick ahead. But place kicker Yohan Pieris sent the ball away from the left upright and the scores were nil-all at half time.

Navy scored almost with the kick-off in the second half as they took play to the left corner flag and off a maul lock forward Adeesha Weeratunga went over with the ball under his arm.

Thilina Weerasinghe failed to add the extra points.

Thereafter too play remained in midfield most of the time with close tackling dominating the game and there was very little the three-quarters could do.

Navy scored again in the 69th minute after a series of loose play. Police players seemed to have lost sight of the ball far right and failed to cover-defend as Thilina Weerasinghe received the ball to run around the touch line to score close to the goal posts.

Dhananjaya Seneviratne put over the conversion to increase their lead to 12 points.

Police had an opportunity at scoring but could not go through the tight defence put up by Navy SC.

Navy player Dinesh de Silva was shown the red card for unwarranted play on a Police forward while tackling.
