Competitors from 40 countries took the beach in Hikkaduwa yesterday competing against local surfers at the ‘Ride My Wave 2022’ surfing event which concludes today.

Organisers said the event offers experience and exposure for local surfers who will be tested against the overseas professionals. This is also the sixth time the event is being held in Sri Lanka sponsored by Red Bull.

The surfing community in Sri Lanka, apart from contributing to the local economy via tourism, keeps the coast and surrounding environment in pristine condition, a fact that often goes unrecognized according to the organisers.

Sri Lanka’s winning surfer who has turned pro now, Lakshitha Madushan, who hails from the Southern Province said that there are many beaches in Sri Lanka suitable for beginners.

“The safest place for beginners is Weligama where the water is shallow. So far no deaths have been reported in this sport, but many are afraid to take to this sport maybe because they do not know how to swim,” said Lakshitha who is the country’s surfing ambassador.

Lucky, as he is known now, started surfing at the age of ten and was the youngest to win this event at the age of 16 in 2016.

He also said that there are more than a dozen spots in Sri Lanka where surfing can be held at different times of the year.

“I have been with ‘Red Bull Ride My Wave’ from the very beginning. This is a great event for young and upcoming surfers to show their talent. The event obviously has international standards and we are glad to be part of this.

“Surfing is a lifestyle and a serious sport. We need to build and broaden the local community around the sport,” said Sandika Thushara who is the contest director.
