Hugh Aldons: A peerless right half

20 February, 2022

Having played with A. Mylvaganam, Ernie Kelaart and Ivan de Kretser, all brilliant centre halves, I consider Hugh Aldons as the complete package having played over 75 matches both at home and abroad. As right half, he was peerless.

When in attack he orchestrated almost every attacking move. His accurate timely hits, judicious scoops, controlled pushes, adept side-stepping, were a treat to a connoisseur. He made his international debut versus India in 1947.

For the Burgher Recreation Club, he played in the winning teams of 1948 to 1950 (captain), 1956 (double) and 1957.

He captained the Mercantile HA at the National Championships in 1956 and 1957 respectively, being joint champions and champions.

A brilliant all-round sportsman, he also represented Havelock SC as a right wing three-quarter and they won the inaugural Clifford Cup and thereafter won his national colours.

Aldons also went on to captain Ceylon at cricket against the Madras CA (Gopalan Trophy).

In his last match for the BRC versus the University in 1957, he scored the goal for BRC to win the Pioneer Cup knock out tournament. A fitting farewell.

The next day he emigrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1957 with his wife Ione and family.
