100 electrocuted annually due to illegal connections

Almost 100 people in Sri Lanka die annually due to electrocution while attempting to obtain CEB electricity on the sly, Manager of the Investigation Unit of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Indika Fernando said.

Most of these victims had attempted to tap electricity illegally by connecting iron hooks to the live cables of CEB electricity power lines countrywide, he told the Sunday Observer. Fernando said the number of number of illegal electricity connections had increased

and hence, about 560 CEB investigators have been deployed to nab power pirates countrywide.

He said nearly 348 people who had attempted to get electricity from the CEB stealthily had been arrested during the past two months and they will be produced in court.
