13 March, 2022

Kandy’s big match between Trinity College and St. Anthony’s College will be played for the 103rd time at the Asgiriya Stadium on June 3 and 4.

It will be played for the John Halangoda memorial trophy.

The one day game will be played on June 11 at the same venue which will be the 39th encounter and will be played for the Sir Richard Aluwihare trophy.

Trinity are all out to organize it on a grand scale this year as they will be celebrating 150 years in existence.

This annual big match began in 1914 and is said to be the the sixth oldest schools cricket encounter in Sri Lanka. However, unfortunately the encounter was not played in the past two years due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Trinity College leads the overall tally with 23 wins while St. Anthony’s College has won it 11 times with 68 encounters drawn.

Trinity last won under the captaincy of Niroshan Dickwella in 2012 where they broke a 25-year hoodoo to win by an innings and one run.

Trinity dominated the series in the early years by winning the match for a record eleven times in a row from 1918 to 1928.

St. Anthony’s last won in 1991 under the captaincy of Umesh de Alwis.
