‘Swimming body never banned’

28 March, 2022

There was a misconception that the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) was banned by FINA the world governing body for swimming some time ago, but the president of FINA Captain Husain Al Musallam said that SLASU was not banned and the reason why Sri Lankan swimmers were allowed to participate in international meets.

An official from SLASU said earlier that FINA did not recognize them due to an interim committee being installed by the government.

“The swimming body of Sri Lanka was not banned,” confirmed Al Musallam.

“For the success in sports the NOC and the national associations must work together then everything will become easy. The goals must be to create a better environment “, added Al Musallam.

“At the discussions held with the NOC of Sri Lanka we agreed to offer two scholarships to athletes (one boy and a girl) to train and study for four years in Budapest,” said Al Musallam.

“The head of a controlling body for any particular sports should be allowed to continue the good work for about twelve years at a stretch,” Al Musallam further said.
