Trinity old boys demand stern action against players and college staffers over referee assault

Deeply shaken and worried ex-students of Trinity College have called on the school authorities to mete out harsh punishment on any of the players and “notable members” of the school staff involved in the assault of the referee and other shameful acts of indiscipline that created rowdy scenes after their inter-school rugby match against S. Thomas’ College at Havelock Park in Colombo last Saturday.

In a letter sent to Trinity College principal Rev Fr. Araliya Jayasundara, the Old Boys Association (OBA) has noted that the incident had brought them and their school “deep shame” in a way it has never happened in the annals of their history.

“We the old boys of Trinity strongly urge stern disciplinary action against the players and staff members involved in this ugly incident unbecoming of Trinity and unfitting to be associated with Trinity.

“A strong message must go out that Trinity upholds great values and is intolerant towards indiscipline at all levels,” the Trinity OBA said in its letter to Fr. Jayasundara, himself an old boy of the school.

Fr. Jayasundara has already assured the Rugby Referees Society that the perpetrators of the assault on their members and subsequent incidents after the match will not be let off unpunished branding it as “hooliganism” that cannot be justified.

“What transpired after the match was appalling and a blatant violation of decency. The Trinity family joins me in unequivocally condemning this act of hooliganism. Whatever the reasons that may have motivated such behaviour, any such attack on any person, especially the match officials, can never be justified,

“I assure all Trinitians and the sports loving public that Trinity College will continue to strive towards excellence in holding the high standards of discipline and professionalism,” Fr Jayasundara said in a statement while congratulating his counterpart of S. Thomas’ College Rev Fr Marc Billimoria on winning the match 17-14.
