Chinese Dragons light up Sri Lanka rowing

Sri Lanka and China held an exhibition friendship Cup rowing competition in Dragon boats at the Diyawanna Uyana Rowing Center on Friday (3) where two races were held.

One of the races was for senior rowers and the other for junior rowers that lit up the show.

The senior race was contested between the rowers from Army and Navy and the Army team triumphed over the Navy team which many thought would have been at home on water.

It was not to be as the Army team fired all cylinders.

The junior race was contested between Air Force and a combined Schools team.

Air Force emerged the winners while the Schools team that comprised rowers from Ananda College, Ladies College, AIS and Gateway finished closely behind.

Junior event winners Air Force team consisted;

Tharanga Rupasinghe, Harsha Samaraweera, Harshani Dilrukshi, Lasitha Resli, Anula Wedage, Melani Silva, Chatura Jayamal, Buddika Chathuranga, Tashi Samarakoon, Sameera Kariyawasam, Drum-Buddika Gunathilaka and Rudder-Sanjeewa Guruge.

Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Zhenhong Qi was a prominent figure at the venue.

He was accompanied by the staff of the Embassy and a couple of members of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

An A class rowing boat was donated by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce to the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka.

The races were conducted by the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka and co-sponsored by the Ministry of Sports and the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka.
