Ups and downs for motor racing

12 June, 2022

Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS) the governing body for motor sports announced their racing calendar early in 2021 with the hope of promoting the sport under the guidance of the president Ashhar Hameem, but unfortunately all plans had to be shelved due to the pandemic that caused havoc to all sporting activities in the country.

Only four major racing events were conducted last year. This year only three events have taken place so far. Those were the Eliyakande Hill Climb, Ice Breaker and the Circuit meet at Mirigama.

Although SLAS had planned the schedule for this year the worsening situation in the country forced them to put on hold these events.

Though the events did not take place, SLAS took steps to issue licences to aspiring young drivers and riders through a new procedure covering the Anti Doping regulations.

In addition, SLAS also conducted briefings and training programs through five Webinars for the benefit of interested racing enthusiasts.

New Technology introductions were an Access Control - for the first time and a fully fledged access control system was introduced at the Katukurunda Circuit meet where all entrants had to scan a QR code to access the track.

Online entry application forms and Payment Gateway - a user friendly Entry submitting system was introduced during the Katukurunda Race meet. This was initiated by committee members of SMSC and the platform is available for any club to use.
