“Extracurricular activities not an obstacle to education”

11 September, 2022

Extra curricular activities are not obstacles to achieve one’s academic goals said Rashini Dulya Dias who secured the all-island second place in the commerce stream at the 2021 G.C.E A/L examination.

The student of Sirimavo Bandaranaike College Colombo proved that activities outside studies will not stand in the way if one is focused on his or her goals.

I have proved that extracurricular activities are not a hindrance to education. I was the Deputy Head Prefect, the captain of the college netball team, a member of the school athletics, cadet and scouting teams, Dias said.

Rashini bagged the best 800m and 1500m athlete awards at the college sports meet.

She brought pride to her alma mater clinching many accolades at regional and provincial athletic tournaments.

Dias said, “I had always balanced studies and sports. My parents and sister have been the strength behind my achievements.

I taught friends who needed help in certain subjects. I had to study online. My mother helped me a lot in sports.

However, as the exam approached I worked hard. Even though I could not sit for all term exams I prepared by doing past papers which helped me achieve the feat.

I would like to thank the Principal of Sirimavo Bandaranaike College, R. A. M. R. Herath, the class in-charge teacher Jeevika Pavithrani and all the teachers who were behind my success, Dias said adding that she preferred to continue her higher education in the commerce stream with IT as a subject.
