Govt vows to overcome students’ malnutrition

25 September, 2022

The Government has taken steps to overcome schoolchildren becoming victims of malnutrition due to the present economic crisis, said National Food Promotion Board of Sri Lanka chairman Palinda Sagara Thudawahewa.

Several programs will be launched in collaboration with local and international organisations to save students from malnutrition.

A program to provide nutritious food and drink for primary schoolchildren of the Kurunegala district would be introduced in November under the patronage of the Ministries of Agriculture and the Health Services, he said.

About 1.5 million primary students of Government schools countrywide will be covered under the program to supply nutritious meals in the first stage, he said.

Students of Government schools will be covered under this program. The programs which have been approved by President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena will be carried out as early as possible.

People will be educated on the food practices of our ancestors and the value of local food varieties and green leaves to encourage them to consume food items of nutritional value without depending on imported food items, he added.
