CAA committees to protect consumers’ rights

30 October, 2022

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) will set up consumers’ committees at Divisional Secretariat level countrywide to protect the rights of consumers.

The members of these committees will have the legal authority to inform the CAA of any malpractices and frauds that violate the fundamental rights of the consumers and exploit them. The CAA investigators could nab errant traders and conduct raids, CAA Chairman Shantha Niriella told the Sunday Observer.

The number of investigators would be increased by 3,000 next year.

Nearly 28,200 raids have been conducted this year and about 8,700 errant traders have been charged in courts.
