Cannabis bust by Navy

A little over 80 kilograms of Kerala cannabis was taken into custody in separate naval detections off the northern coast inside the past 48 hours.

During a special operation off the coast of Jaffna, the Sri Lanka Navy intercepted a dinghy carrying Kerala cannabis weighing more than 41 kilograms, Navy Media Spokesman Captain Indika De Silva said.

One person was also taken into custody along with the cannabis and the dinghy, he said.

“In a separate detection, a suspicious dingy was intercepted by ‘SLNS Welusumana’ in the Northern Naval Command, during a special operation mounted off Kalmunai Point.

A little over 41 kilograms Kerala cannabis concealed in 19 packages was taken into custody along with one suspect, De Silva said.

The total street value of the seized Kerala cannabis is estimated to be more than Rs 12 million.

The suspects along with the seized cannabis and the dinghies were later handed over to the Police for follow up action.

The Sri Lanka Navy regularly conducts search operations and patrols in the island’s waters to ward off illegal activities taking place via sea routes, he said.
