20 November, 2022

Sri Lanka cricketer Dhanushka Gunathilaka has been granted bail over the alleged rape of a Sydney woman in Australia but has to come under police surveillance until his case is taken up in court on January 12, 2023.

Gunathilaka, who makes headlines for the wrong reasons, has been ordered by court to report to police daily and be bound by a night curfew from 9 pm to 6 am while also avoiding any contact with the Sydney woman he is accused of raping.

He was released on surety bail of 150,000 Australian dollars that amounts to Rs. 36 million in Sri Lanka money and was also ordered to refrain from using so-called online dating Apps like the one that brought him into contact with his female accuser.

Surety bail refers to a person who comes to court and promises to supervise an accused person while he or she is out on bail.

In this case should Gunathilaka violate his bail conditions the surety will have to pay the court 150,000 Australian dollars.
