Sri Lanka netball champion recalls her hard ride to the top

Dulangi Wannitilleke the vice captain of the Sri Lanka netball team that won the Asian championship along with the Asian Regional Derector of the World Netball Federation Victoria Lakshmi and Sri Lanka Schools Netball president Nirodha Abeywickrama were felicitated by the Kurunegala District Netball Association at a ceremony held at the Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya yesterday.

Dulangi Wannitilleka a product of Holy Family Convent Kurunegala was coached by her parents Amalka Gunatilleka and Ananda Wannitilleka.

“I am proud today to be part of this occasion as the national netball vice captain. I came up the very hard way and happy to have been with the team that became Asian champions.

“This is a team sport and we are very committed and dedicated having all the blessings of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka headed by Victoria Lakshmi who herself is a proud of Maliyadeva,” said Dulangi.

Victoria Lakshmi who is also the vice president of the Asia Netball Federation is the first Sri Lankan netball official to be appointed to the World Netball body. With her felicitated was also Nirodha Abeywickrama who is the president of the Schools Netball Association, vice president of the National Netball Federation and principal of Maliyadeva Balika.

The chief guest of the occasion was Salinda Bandara Dassanayake the Director General of Ports Shipping and Aviation who paid a tribute to the Wannitilleka family and the Netball Federation.
