27 November, 2022

BRC came up with a timely display of superb cricket to beat hosts Colombo Malay Cricket Club (CMCC) by five wickets in the Cup final at the Invitation six-a-side cricket tournament to celebrate CMCC’s 150th anniversary at the MCA ground yesterday.

Sent in to bat first Malay CC could notch up only 44 for the loss of four wickets in five overs and in reply BRC scored 50 for no loss in just 2.3 overs with TM Sampath top scoring on 42 not out.

Sampath went on to bag the best batter’s prize in the final while Danal Hamananda also of BRC took the best bowler’s award in the final.

Malay CC batted well to give them match winning totals in the first round and the semi-final. They scored a total of 61 without loss to beat CCC in the first round. They then scored 78 runs for three wickets to beat Colts in the semi-final. However, they could not repeat their feat in the final against BRC facing some accurate bowling.

There were many good hits over the ropes that thrilled the sparse crowd and many cricket balls that were sent well past the boundary were lost.

There were also some spectacular fielding displays specially one well judged catch taken by a Malay CC player on the boundary rope.

Avishka Perera of Colts too made some big hits and finished on an unbeaten 50 off just 20 deliveries and failed to beat Malay CC in the Cup semi-final.

The BRC team comprised TM Sampath, Dushan Hemantha, Lahiru Samarakoon, Leo Francisco, Danal Hemananda, Resansora Silva, Malinda Jayod and Dulaj Ashen.

Meanwhile SSC clinched the Plate title when they beat Moors SC by five wickets in the final.

Moors SC scored 66 runs for four wickets in their five overs and SSC notched up the winning runs scoring 68 without loss in 4 overs.

Krishan Sanjula scored 37 not out and Shevon Daniel unbeaten 16.
