Old Bens, Old Petes win at football

St. Benedict’s Old Boys over-40 and St. Peter’s Old Boys under-40 shared the honours in the second Annual Milroy Perera Memorial Trophy as they won their respective age groups in the Football matches played at Bambalapitiya.

The matches were organized in collaboration with the centenary year celebrations of St. Peter’s College.

The matches between the old boys of the two schools produced entertaining football which was enjoyed and cheered by their respective old boys and their families.

The first match between Old Bens Veterans and Old Petes Veterans ended in a 1-1 draw.

Mahesh Selvaratnam of Old Bens Veterans and Isuru Perera of Old Petes Veterans scored the goals.

Old Bens Veterans won 3-1 on a penalty shootout to covert the trophy.

Old Bens Veteran goalkeeper Lalantha Kumara put up a brilliant show by saving two penalties which paved the way for his team to clinch the trophy.

Lalantha Kumara of Old Bens and Isuru Perera of Old Petes won the best players awards while Mahesh Selvaratnam of Old Bens Veterans won the man of the match award.

In the under-40 match Old Peterites had the better of Old Bens to win by 4 goals to 2 and clinch the Milroy Perera memorial trophy.

Old Bens dominated early in the match and took the lead in the 14th minute through a penalty scored by skipper Chameera Krishantha.

Though the Old Bens scored first they let the game slip away from their grip and Old Petes took over the domination and surged ahead by half time.

Former national player Shabir Razoonia scored twice in the 23rd and 28th minutes to give Old Petes the lead.

Old Petes extended the lead 3-1 five minutes before the break when another former national player Sundararaj Niresh scored with a beauty.

After the turn around Sundararaj Niresh scored for Old Petes again through a 22-yard free-kick.

Chameera Krishantha scored his second goal of the match for the Old Bens and the game turned to be a thriller from there onwards. Old Bens fought hard to score again but their attempts were off target leaving the Old Petes winners by 4 goals to 2.

Malintha Nimantha of Old Bens and Shabir Razoonia of Old Petes were adjudged as the best players and the man of the match award went to Sundararaj Niresh.
