Power piracy costs CEB Rs. 20 m annually

8 January, 2023

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) incurs about Rs. 20 million loss annually due to illegal electricity connections, Regional Senior Engineer of the CEB, G.M. Ariyaratne said.

About 149 raids were conducted in 2021 to nab those who tap electricity illegally. At present nobody takes responsibility for street lamps on the main roads.

Ariyaratne said nearly 4,237 investigators will be deployed by the CEB this year to nab those who tap electricity illegally.

Awareness programs will be held countrywide to educate schoolchildren on the ways and means of using electricity sparingly. All unnecessary CEB expenditure would be done away with, he added.
