Havelocks, Army to resume match within two days after rain halts play

8 January, 2023

Rain and flooded ground conditions forced the inter club League rugby encounter between Havelock SC and Army SC to be halted at half time (4.45 p.m.) with Havelocks leading 17 points to 8 at Panagoda yesterday.

According to tournament rules the match has to resume at the same time within the next 48 hours. In case the game cannot be resumed within 48 hours the team that was leading at the time of the stoppage will be declared the winners.

Havelocks scored two tries, two conversions and a penalty while Army scored a try and a penalty.

Havelocks began the scoring in the ninth minute when they were offered a penalty and Sandesh Jayawickrama had no difficulty in putting it over.

Army was also awarded a penalty and Isuri Medegadera put over the 28 metre penalty.

Havelocks scored their first try in the 29th minute with the rain falling after a three-quarter move made Christin De Lile force his way past a defender to touch down.

Jayawickrema had no difficulty in converting it.

Army got their chance to score and off a line out as they worked a rolling maul and Rasika Abeynayake barged over to score. Isuri Medegadera converted with ease.

There was a lot of kicking by both teams with wet conditions making it difficult to run around.

Havelocks went ahead in the 37th minute when burly number eight Vivanka Prasad barged over off a scrum for Jayawickrema to convert and give them the much needed lead.
