Lack of police officers for polls duty

15 January, 2023

The IGP has told the Elections Commission that there is a lack of police personnel for election duties and providing security for candidates. The forthcoming election will need 68,000 police officers but there are only 60,000 officers at present.

The IGP said that social media is rife with threats such as “We will take care of those who come to homes canvassing votes” and if candidates are assaulted they would require protection which would cause more issues. Meanwhile, Rs. 1 billion was spent on police duties during the last election and the IGP said that the police will need Rs. 3 billion for the upcoming election.
