Junior basketball gets underway today with nearly 500 players in action

The 20th edition of the re-branded Junior Basketball Championship named Vaaj Junior Premier League Basketball will be held today at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo.

The Secretary of the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation Chandana Liyanage said 28 men’s teams and 12 women’s team will compete at this event in all divisions with 480 players expected to take part.

“These are the finest youth basketball talents and they are the future and this type of tournament is a good opportunity to showcase their talents”, said Liyanage.

The players in the under 23 age group are eligible to take part while the players from district Associations, Sri Lanka schools, Armed forces and Sri Lanka universities will take part this tournament.

Sri Lanka Basketball completes 105 years in 2023 while 126 schools are actively taking part in the sport.

Recently the Sri Lanka women’s basketball team emerged South Asian champions that has given a boost to young cagers.

The men’s final will be held at 7pm today while women’s final will commence from 5.30 pm onwards.
