75th Independence Day ceremony at Galle Face Green

29 January, 2023

The Government is finalising arrangements to mark the nation’s 75th Independence anniversary at the Galle Face Green on February 4.

A special religious program and an overnight Maha Pirith recital will take place at the Sri Dalada Maligawa to mark Independence Day. Hindu, Islamic, and Christian religious rites will also be performed to invoke blessings on the country.

There will be many celebrations across the country to mark Independence Day starting on February 2 and ending on February 19. The Government has announced entrance fee-free days in the national gardens, including the National Zoological Gardens to commemorate Independence Day.

A full-scale cultural festival and an exhibition of traditional art, song and dance has also been organised at Independence Square. An Independence-day bike parade from Dondra Head to Point Pedro and the opening of the Jaffna Cultural Centre have also been planned.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe reiterated on Thursday that the 75th anniversary of Independence should be observed in a fitting manner.

“We must celebrate it. If this were not the case, the world will think that we cannot even celebrate our Independence Day. It could have a negative impact on the country. We are a country trying to attract foreigners and investors. It is of paramount importance that we maintain a positive image about our country,” he said, adding, “Let us, however, cut down on the expenditure while planning Independence Day activities.”
