Homagama to become Teaching Hospital

9 February, 2023

The Cabinet has approved to upgrade the Homagama Base Hospital to a Teaching Hospital following a request made by Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena.

Homagama has become an educational hub as many private universities, and faculties of state universities are located in that area together with many other government institutions. The Homagama Base Hospital, which is located close to the Expressway, provides services to a large number of people, and treats more than 1,000 patients a day. It is the main hospital between Avissawella and Colombo. A special meeting was held at the Transport and Highways Ministry to discuss the preliminary work of upgrading the Homagama Base Hospital to a Teaching Hospital, including the legal framework to it, and improving the facilities of the hospital by also obtaining the contributions from the private sector.

Sri Lanka’s first Sports University will also come up in Homagama in the future. Homagama Base Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara and the hospital administration took part in the meeting.
