Twenty eight protesters who were injured during yesterday’s protest by the National People’s Power (NPP) in Colombo were brought to the National Hospital in Colombo for treatment, a NPP spokesman said. The police fired tear gas and water cannons in an attempt to disperse the protesters.

The road leading from the Nelum Pokuna Theatre towards Town Hall was also completely blocked due to the protest and motorists using the road were inconvenienced. The NPP protest was held despite two court orders being issued by both the Fort Magistrate’s Court and the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court, preventing a total of 26 persons, including Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake from entering several areas in Colombo during the protest. The protest was held demanding the government to hold the local authority election without delay.
