Siri Piyarathane girls grab Malay prize

Little known Siri Piyarathane Central College Padukka emerged champions in the under-15 schools category defeating Yasodara Balika 9-7 in the final while Hillwood girls from Kandy stole the limelight in the club segment at the One-Whistle Invitational Netball Tournament conducted by the Colombo Malay Cricket Club (CMCC) to mark the end of its 150th anniversary celebrations which began in March last year.

Hillwood Club won the club final defeating Kalutara Balika 11-7 played at the Padang on March 5 in a carnival atmosphere.

Hillwood girls also carried away all the special awards on offer with Kusalika Aluwihare being crowned as the CMCC Netball Queen, Yuthara Rajaratnam (Best Centre Court player), Lakshika Aluwihare (Best Defensive Player) and Vichali Mawilmada (Best Shooter).

The tournament was organised under the supervision of former national captain and Asia Cup winning coach Hyacinth Wijesinghe with the participation of 20 teams including two men’s teams from Moneragala and Ratnapura who featured in an exhibition match.

A unique feature of this tournament was that matches were played simultaneously on four courts beginning and ending with one whistle during the league stage with a running clock of seven minutes in each half with an interval of one minute.

The match for third place among clubs finished interestingly with Gothami Balika and Campbell SC ending in a 9-9 draw.

Siri Piyarathane, Padukka emerged champions in the under-15 schools category defeating Yasodara Balika 9-7 in the final.

Princess of Wales College beat Yasodara in the game for third place.

The Veterans’ final was won by Track Masters who beat Police 7-4 while Devians from Kurunegala finished in third place when they beat Gold Getters.

A past official of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka Yasmin Dharmaratne was the chief guest while Damayanthi Jayathilaka was the Guest of Honour. NFSL president Lakshmi Victoria also graced the occasion.
