19 March, 2023

People can view rare ornaments of historical importance used by the great King Mahasen, (270-303 A.D.) who is popularly known as Minneri Deviyo at Minneriya old Mahasen Devalaya. The ornaments include anklets and swords used by the king and several large size brass plates said to have been used by the giants (Yodayas) who built  the Minneriya tank.

According to the trustee of the Devalaya, Manthree Udalagama (85), these valuables had been entrusted to the then Rate Mahattaya of Bathgampattuwa, one Wickremasekara by the King Rajasinghe II.

“We have been entrusted with these valuables by the Rate Mahattaya through a Copper Sannasa.

We have been preserving these valuables since then. My ancestors are said to have served king Mahasen.

Even today, we conduct annual poojas at the Devalaya commemorating the great King,” Udalagama said.
