Exodus of badminton players forces SLB to wake up from slumber

19 March, 2023

Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB) has once again hired an Indonesian coach who has been put in charge of training youngsters in Colombo amid reports that scores of players are leaving the country in search of employment or for studies.

Insiders say SLB is now awakening to the truth that there is a drop in standards among the senior players who are failing to win at international level.

This perception is nothing new to badminton in Sri Lanka as Asia produces the best players in the world and this leaves the island way behind among countries like China, Indonesia, Malaysia and even India to say the least.

SLB has also realized the need to raise standards of the game and another is to attract more players at a time when many parents are going through financial difficulties.

Besides this there is speculation that many players in the under-19 and 17 are gradually deserting the sport as they leave their original schools and enrol at International Schools to obtain an education in English for overseas jobs.

It is also reported that some of the national players have left the country already in search of employment or for studies as badminton has nothing to offer them.
