Opposition MPs pledge support for IMF program

Many Opposition MPs told Parliament on Thursday and Friday that they would extend their support to President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s program regarding the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout.

They were speaking after the President presented the terms of the agreement to Parliament.

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentarian Kabir Hashim said that Sri Lanka has come out of bankruptcy and believes all Sri Lankan citizens should be happy about it.

SJB MP Kumara Welgama said he would extend his fullest support to implement the IMF proposals. SJB parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva said he was happy to see Sri Lanka receiving the IMF package and added that it is not hypocritical to acknowledge it.

National People’s Power MP Vijitha Herath said that it is not wrong to take a loan from the IMF during a financial crisis.

SJB parliamentarian J. C. Alawathuwala said that he would extend his support for the President’s program on the IMF.
