Commissioners accuse SLHRC Chief of arbitrary behaviour

9 April, 2023

Dr. Vijitha Nanayakkara, Dr. Nimal Karunasiri and Ven. Kalupahana Piyarathana Thera of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (SLHRC) had informed the President, Prime Minister, Justice Minister and senior officials in writing that they are unable to work with the SLHRC Chairperson, retired Judge Rohini Marasinghe.

According to the letter, the chairperson is not adhering to the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission Act and is ignoring the opinions and suggestions of its members. They added that the members did not approve the Commission’s last February proposals in March as the Chairperson continued to ignore the decisions made by the majority of the members.

The three Commissioners have decided not to approve any of the chairperson’s decisions since she doesn’t listen to the Commission, and the letter demanded that the issue be addressed immediately. The SLHRC has five members and three of them have signed and forwarded this letter.
