The Government has decided to recruit 1000 Family Health Service Officers (Midwives) with a view to expanding maternal and child health services in the country. The money to pay the training allowance of the student Family Health Service Officers during their training period will be granted by the Primary Health Care System Strengthening Project of the World Bank. Project Director Dr.Jayasundara Bandara said that allowances will be paid during the training period of these midwives who are already training in the centres. The prime objective of this initiative is to empower the primary health care system in Sri Lanka.
He also said that the project also supports a number of other programs to improve maternal and child health services in Sri Lanka.
