10 new records at school athletics

A total of ten new meet records were established at the Sir John Tarbat Senior Athletic Championships that concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Out of the ten records five were by boys while the other five were from girls.

The boys who set new records were T. Mendis in the under-16 high jump by clearing two metres, Akalanka in the 400m hurdles in the under-18 age, Yasiru 16.19 metres n the triple jump for under-20 years, WDD Fernando in the javelin for a new distance of 64.92 metres in under-20 age while the under-16 boys 4×400 relay team also set a new record.

The girls to establish records were D. Fernando in the 200m under-16, MGTA Pemasiri in the 800m who clocked 2:14.02 for under16 age, Sasvi Seneviratne who clocked 1:04.90 in the 400m hurdles for under-16, Tharushi Karunaratne clocked 52.62 in the 400m for under-20 while the under-16 4x400m relay team set a new time of 3:50.88m.

KM Yasiru of Kahawatta Central was adjudged the best boy athlete while Tharushi Karunaratne of A. Ratnayake Central Walala was adjudged the best girl athlete.

Meanwhile medal prospect at the forthcoming Asian Games to be held in China Tharushi Karunaratne once again evolved with a record breaking feat.

She smashed the national junior record in the girls’ 400 metres with a remarkable time of 52.62 seconds in the under-20 category.

The record breaking runner Tharushi who had broken the 800 metres record at the Asian Athletic Championship will be skipping this event as she is concentrating hard on the one lap event for the Asian Games.

Tharushi beat her closest rival MH Dewmini of Visakha Girls High School Badulla by almost five seconds in the 400m event. She also smashed the meet record and the National Junior record which was also her personal best effort.

Ayomal Akalanka the Commonwealth Youth Games medallist also excelled at this meet. He improved on the under-18 boys 400 metres hurdles meet record for the second time. His new record time was 51.85 seconds in the final.

UMA Sandeepa a College mate of Akalanka, also won the 400m hurdles event in a time of 56.35 seconds for boys under-16 years.
