22 April, 2018

A unit which was temporarily shut last week, for maintenance at the Nororchcholai Lakvijaya power plant will recommence power generation from tomorrow, contributing the power plant’s optimum of 900 MW to the national grid.

A highly placed official at Lakvijaya told the Sunday Observer that work on the unit has been completed and was ready for use.

“The Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP), a unit that collects fly ash exiting the chimney, from being released to the atmosphere, was faulty and we have rectified the fault. It will be restarted tomorrow, contributing 300MW, to the system; its full capacity,” he said.

Earlier, the Provincial Environmental Authority of the North Western Province requested the Lakvijaya authorities to shut the unit and rectify the malfunction. The official further reassured that there will not be any temporary shutdown for maintenance in the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, members of the Ceylon Electricity Board Engineer’s Union attached to Lakvijaya will also take part in the work to rule campaign organised by the Union and due to commence on May 8.

According to the Chairman of the Union, Saumya Kumarawadu, engineers will not attend to any emergency situations that are not within working hours, or will not take calculated risks that they would have otherwise taken.

State Minister of Power and Renewable Energy, Ajith P. Perera told the Sunday Observer that the Ministry is involved in resolving the trade union demand.

“We are taking all steps to resolve the issue and to ensure that power supply is not disrupted,” he said.
