Colombo football veterans aim for fifth Masters title

Colombo Veterans FC led by former national player M.H. Rumy and ably supported by its founder president R. Puvanenthiran are determined to put up a good show in the 13th International Masters Goodwill Soccer Festival to be played in Colombo.

Ten teams will be vying for honours in this tournament which will be played on September 7, 8 and 9 at two grounds, City League and Rifle Green commencing each day at 8 a.m.

This tournament which was inaugurated in 2005 with four teams from India, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka has now expanded to 10 teams including two European sides.

Chennai Veterans (India), Dubai Expats (UAE), London Olympic Veterans (UK), Medan Veterans (Indonesia), Plames Sports (South Africa), Savanna Veterans (Mauritius), Selangor Veterans (Malaysia), Singapore Veterans Association (Singapore), Sri Lak FC - Milan (Italy) and the hosts Colombo Veterans FC will compete on a round robin basis.

The team that has most points at the end of the tournament will be declared as the champion of the 13th International Masters Goodwill Soccer Festival.

Founder president of Colombo FC and former vice president of FFSL R. Puvanenthiran said that they were honoured to conduct this tournament in Sri Lanka.

“We are privileged and honoured to sponsor and organize a tournament of this caliber which enables former players to enjoy themselves and recollect the past glories. We are sure that this kind of tournament will definitely encourage the youth who love to play football and we are sure that a vast crowd will gather at the venues to witness this tournament played by players of yesteryear” said Puvanenthiran.

The hosts Colombo Veterans FC consisting of several former national players has already won this tournament four times and will be eyeing the title for the fifth time this year.
