G.C.E. Advanced Level Examinations 2017:Varsity admission for 160,104

The G.C.E. Advanced Level Examinations 2017 results were released on December 28, 2017. The number of candidates who sat the exam were 253,483. According to the Department of Examinations, 163,104 students have qualified to enter the university and 205 students’ results were suspended. Speaking in regard to this, Commissioner General of Examinations, Sanath Pujitha said, the results of 205 students were suspended due to copying and cheating in the examination hall.

“The major fraud that took place in the A/L Examination this year was at a leading boys’ school in Colombo where a student was accused of electronically transmitting questions in the Chemistry paper using a Bluetooth device to a tuition master and receiving answers from him.

He is barred for life from taking any government exams. Minister of Education, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Secretary of Education, Sunil Hettiarachchi and myself are discussing to minimize frauds in the future.

An exam policy decision will be released soon after the discussion. Stern action will be taken against candidates who engage in exam frauds and malpractices. A wider program will be implemented to minimize high tech frauds in the examinations,” Pujitha said.

According to the Department of Examinations, the closing date for re-corrections is January 15, 2018. Therefore, applications to scrutinize the 2017 A/L results should be forwarded to the Examinations Department before January 15, 2018. Dilini Sadunika Palihakkara of Sujatha Balika Vidyalaya, Matara has topped the island ranking in the Biology stream while Sridharan Duwarakan of Hartley College, Point Pedro has topped the island ranking in the Physical Science stream at the GCE A/L examination, 2017. S.A. Dulani Rasanthika of Sujatha Balika Vidyalaya, Matara and Ven. Pathberiye Munindawansha Thera of Saddarmalankara Pirivena, Ratnapura have topped the island ranking in the Commerce and Arts streams. Principal Ananda College, Colombo, S.M. Keerthirathne speaking to the Sunday Observer said, the overall results of the students at Ananda College is good and that 195 students have got all three simple passes.

“Ishan Shaluka Ramanayake was placed third island wide in the Bio Science Stream. Ishan entered Ananda College after his Grade Five Scholarship exams. He is a hardworking and an intelligent student who is more into academics rather than extra-curricular activities,” he said.
