Sri Lanka to gain by supporting Asian Amendment says football chief

4 November, 2018

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) said that their decision to support the Amendments of the AFC Congress were in line with almost all countries in Asia with a vision of maximizing football development support.

The Annual Congress of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) was concluded on October 31, 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Sri Lanka supported the Amendment along with 42 countries in favour out of 46.

President of the FFSL Anura de Silva said that fake news was being spread claiming that Sri Lanka committed an illegal act by supporting the Amendment.

He said the same Amendment was made by the FIFA and the European League as well and the Minister of Sports was kept informed of Sri Lanka’s stand at the Congress.

“We are depending on FIFA and AFC grants to run football in Sri Lanka and we need to get all the support of the majority of member nations and we took a wise decision”, said De Silva.

“The FFSL’s decision to support the Amendments was in line with almost all countries in Asia and with a vision of maximizing football development support from all leading countries and the AFC in the near future”.

The sport’s world governing body FIFA has confirmed that the Amendments were in line with its principles of broadbased representation and better governance.

Minister of Sports Faiszer Musthapha wrote to the FFSL President in a letter dated October 26, 2108 with regard to media reports on the matter and confirmed that there would not be any interference from him and called on the FFSL to take a decision in the best interest of football in Sri Lanka.
